Cough Causes Crash, Closure

At 5:40 p.m. Monday, the Warsaw Police Department was called to 1335 Ind. 15N for reports of a property damage accident involving a hydrant and a utility pole. 

The driver of a 2009 Hyundai, Billy Shepherd, 63, of 15592 Cedar Road, Bourbon, was traveling north on Ind. 15 when he reportedly coughed and swerved across the southbound lanes of traffic.

Shepherd’s vehicle struck a fire hydrant, breaking it off its base, and then he hit a utility pole, breaking it off as well.

A second vehicle, driven by Tamela Ingle, 54, of 2689 S. Southwood Drive, Warsaw, was struck by the swinging utility pole. 

Damage was estimated at $10,000 to $25,000.

No injuries were reported.
