Coroner Faces DWI Charge

WHITLEY COUNTY - Kosciusko County Coroner John Sadler was arrested in Whitley County for driving while intoxicated Sunday night.

Sadler, 48, was called by Indiana State Police after a trooper pulled over his son, Derrick Sadler, 19, for speeding at the intersection of U.S. 30W and CR 300W, four miles west of Columbia City.

The younger Sadler was given a portable breath test and his blood alcohol content was .17. The legal limit in Indiana is .08.

When the elder Sadler arrived to retrieve the son's vehicle, police believed him to be intoxicated and he was arrested after his BAC was tested at .10 percent.

Contrary to reports by the Associated Press and other news outlets, Derrick Sadler is not a deputy coroner with Kosciusko County. At the time of his arrest, he was wearing a coroner's jacket belonging to his father.

The Times-Union confirmed this morning that the only deputy coroners in the county are Larry Ladd, Tony Ciriello, Mike Wilson and Josh Spangle.

During a phone conversation this morning, John Sadler declined to comment other than saying, "The only thing I can say at this time is I'm scheduled for court at 1:30 (p.m.) today and I reserve the right to comment until I have some time."

Sadler was re-elected as the county's coroner in November.

Both Sadlers' bonds were set at $9,500 with 10 percent of that needed to bail out. Both men bonded out.
