The recent economic climate, along with the holidays, has lead to a rise in telephone scams.
According to Kosciusko County Sheriff Rocky Goshert, the most current scam involves receiving a call from a "credit company". The caller will state that there is a large amount of debt on the account. The caller then attempts to talk the individual into sending a certain amount in order to keep civil charges from being filed.
Goshert stated that anyone who receives such a call should try to get as much information from the caller as possible, such as return phone number and mailing address, before hanging up.
If you receive such a call, get in touch with your credit institutions immediately, and have contact information from your last billing statement available.
This type of fraud is part of a larger network and cannot be easily traced, nor can any mailed funds be returned.
Goshert said that anyone receiving such a call should contact the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, as well as their credit agencies.
