The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and the Warsaw Police Department teamed up recently with the Norfolk Southern Railroad police to educate the Warsaw public on the dangers of railroad crossing accidents.
On Wednesday, officers from all three law enforcement agencies came together to provide Warsaw motorist with information regarding railroad crossing dangers.Officers met with Norfolk Southern Railroad officials and began a campaign by handing out safety pamphlets to traffic that passed over the north-south Norfolk Southern railroad track crossings in the city.
Officers were assigned to various city street crossings, particularly the Hickory Street area where two different train/car crashes had occurred earlier this year. Norfolk Southern officials had originally contacted Warsaw Lt. Steve Rockey asking for assistance in a multi-agency media blitz at these particular crossings. Norfolk Southern ran northbound trains through Warsaw while officers monitored traffic that might pull in front of the engine or go around crossing gates that were down. Officers and railroad officials stated that they plan on performing other safety programs and possible Operation Lifesaver Projects in the future involving officers inside the actual train engines.
