Cooling Centers Open In WarsawThe city of Warsaw will have two cooling centers open through Sunday for anyone seeking to avoid the excessive heat.
Pete Thorn Center at 800 N. Park Ave. and Fellowship Missions, 1520 E. Winona Ave., will be open today through Sunday, according to information provided by the city.
The Pete Thorn building will be open during the daytime, but Fellowship Missions can accommodate people overnight.
City officials urge residents to check on neighbors and keep pets safe from the heat.
The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning this morning for all of northern Indiana until 8 p.m. Sunday.
Temperatures will peak into the lower to middle 90s today and Sunday, with middle to upper 90s on Saturday.
Heat indexes will reach near 105 today and Sunday, and around 110 on Saturday, according to the weather service.
An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur.
The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity is expected to lead to an increased risk of heat-related stress and illness.
Among those most susceptible are the very young, the elderly, those without air conditioning and those participating in strenuous outdoor activities.
