Contaminated Glass Miffs Recyclers

Posted

Bins for food and drink glass continue to be contaminated with other kinds of glass, said county recycling director Sue Studebaker Tuesday.

She advised the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Board this dumping ruins the entire collection and recycling contractor Stafford Waste has no option but to take it to the landfill.

Studebaker said everything from window panes to toilets are found in the bins.

There is very little profit on glass as a commodity anyway and she is tempted to stop glass collection.

Board member Avis Gunter said the district offered glass recycling again because the public wanted it, but it could just as easily be stopped once more.

The board amended Ordinance 09-09-03-1b regarding prices for waste tire collection at: $1.25 for car tires; $5 for truck tires and $15 for tractor tires. People bringing television sets 31 inches and larger will be charged $25. Included in the ordinance are costs for chemical disposal. Businesses will pay half the district's costs.

Studebaker told about a traffic accident she had in Indianapolis with the district vehicle Oct. 5. The pickup was "totaled," although she is fine, she said.

The board also:

• Approved Studebaker's request to attend a household waste handling recertification conference in Bloomington Nov. 15.

• Heard a station for paper and cardboard recycling will open in Pierceton next week.

• Approved moving $100,000 of districts funds to a certificate of deposit for 90 days. Controller Sue Ann Mitchell said that would be better than keeping a balance of more than $200,000 in a checking account. that didn't pay interest.

• Heard the Mentone recycling bins have been moved to the former Tom and Jerry's Grocery Store parking lot.

• Heard a prescription drug collection is set for Thursday at the Warsaw Senior Services Center on Park Avenue.

Board members are Brad Jackson, Avis Gunter, David Delp, George Clemens and John Kinsey. Ernie Wiggins and Ron Truex were absent.
