Construction Projects Scheduled In Winona

WINONA LAKE - Traveling through town will take patience and caution for the next two months, as two road construction projects get under way today.

According to Public Works Superintendent Kim Endicott, work began on the Park Avenue rehabilitation project this morning and should be completed in 60 days.

"Phend and Brown began the milling today, picking up where the last resurfacing left off last year," Endicott said.

The segment of Park Avenue scheduled for rehabilitation is between Auditorium and the post office. Endicott asks residents, particularly those of the island, to find alternative routes around the construction.

"With all the work that's been going on over the past couple of years, I'd like to think everyone knows how to get around," he said. "People living on the island can take Kings Highway to 7th Street, then down to 12th Street and then over to the island."

Less extensive work is also being done on Grace Avenue and Oak Street, he added.

"That work should be done in the next week or two," he said.

Town Marshal Malcolm Gilbert said his department plans no additional traffic control measures for the construction area, but he does urge motorists to be aware of the work crews and their activities.

"There's going to be a lot of construction activity and a lot of workers doing their jobs and not paying attention to traffic," he said. "So motorists need to pay extra attention.

"Park Avenue will be down to one lane, and traffic will be controlled by a flagman," he added.
