Conservation Officers Warn Of Thin Ice

Posted

With the unseasonably warm temperatures this year some area ice fisherman have been a bit overeager to get out on the ice.

In the last month area conservation officers have fished three people from the cold waters, including one person from Lake Wawasee.

Another man drowned at Potato Creek State Park last week.

Officer Kenneth Wade said three is a high number for late December.

"Normally we have pretty decent ice this time of year," he said.

Wade also said there is no standard upon which to judge the safety of the ice, but said that 5 inches or more is a safe thickness.

He said anyone who decides to brave the ice should never go out alone and should always tell someone where they will be.
