SOUTH WHITLEY - Conrad E. Smith, 80, formerly of Whitley County, died at 5:45 a.m. March 31, 2007, in Miller's Merry Manor, Huntington, where he resided.
He was born Nov. 19, 1926, in Whitley County, to Garland and Minerva Colvin Smith. On March 5, 1949, he married Carol E. Bayer, who died June 15, 2002.
He was a 1944 Larwill High School graduate, and returned to South Whitley from New Orleans in 1950. He worked at Slater Steel, Fort Wayne, for 31 years and Lindenwood Cemetery for 3-1/2 years. He was a member of Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, Huntington.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Karen Lee) VanHouten, Columbia City; two sons, Jeffery Lynn Smith, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Randall Wayne Smith, Markle; five grandchildren; two brothers, Gay Smith, Columbia City, and Garland Lee Smith, Huntington; and a sister, Donna Rae Heimlich, South Whitley. He was preceded in death by a son.
A memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Huntington. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery.
