Congressional Candidate Hayhurst Visits WarsawThird District Congressional candidate Tom Hayhurst visited Warsaw Tuesday night to discuss his run for congress.
Hayhurst (D-Fort Wayne) spoke to approximately 30 members of St. Regis Club, a social and civic organization in downtown Warsaw.
Hayhurst will face Republican congressional candidate Marlin Stutzman during a Nov. 2 special and general election.
Hayhurst previously ran for the seat in 2006 when he won the Democratic primary election over the Rev. Kevin Boyd in May 2006. Hayhurst was defeated in 2006 by Mark Souder with a 54-46 percent margin.
He served on the Fort Wayne City Council from 1996 to 2008.
Hayhurst currently serves as medical director of the Tuberculosis Control Division of the Infectious Disease Center, a part of the Fort Wayne-Allen County Health Department.
Hayhurst said his grandchildren have been his driving force for his decision to run for Congress.
"I'm concerned about the kind of society my grandchildren will grow up in and when I look at the U.S., what concerns me is the gradual shrinkage in middle America," Hayhurst said.
He said the working, middle class needs to be stabilized.
He said there needs to be a focus on trade reform and work done on a trade policy that favors American workers, and he said if elected he will fight for clean energy jobs.
"I am a strong advocate for passenger and freight rail and if we strengthen the rail system it could create jobs," Hayhurst said.
He also said he supports biofuels.
Hayhurst said education is an issue that is important to him.
"One of the reasons I am interested in biology and went to medical school and became a doctor is because there was a push for education in the United States," Hayhurst said.
He said education is the greatest hope for creating good jobs and he said there needs to be a national resurgence of education.
Hayhurst addressed the topic of healthcare and said he feels there should be free health clinics that could take care of a lot of people.
Hayhurst said he supports term limits for government leaders, and said there needs to be a federal term limits amendment considered.
