Concert Saturday To Benefit BABE

The Lake Area Community Band and the Grace College Wind Ensemble will present a program "Pops At Presby" Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Family Life Center at the Warsaw First Presbyterian Church.

The concert will benefit BABE, a program of the Health Care Foundation of Kosciusko County Inc. Attendees are asked to bring a new or gently used baby item or clothing up to size 4T.

The combined groups will number more than 70 musicians from Grace College, community members and adult members of the Lake Area Community Band from Kosciusko and Elkhart counties.

The two groups will combine into one band for the program. Both groups are under the direction of Martin Becker. Assistant director of the Lake Area Community Band is Phil Ehereman.

The concert will begin with the playing of the national anthem, sung by Natalie Bryan, a fourth-grader at Jefferson Elementary. John Phillip Sousa and Karl King marches will be featured throughout the program. Popular medleys included in the program will be "Bricusse" and "Newly on Broadway" and selections from Meredith Willson's "The Music Man."

A trombone feature, "Cool Blues For Trombones," and a Dixieland band feature, "Basin Street Blues," will bring a jazz beat to the program.

For the younger concert attendees, the bands will perform music from "Star Wars," "Superman" and "Star Trek," along with the favorite cartoon music from "Rocky and Bullwinkle."

For the older generation the band will feature a medley of nostalgic tunes from "Tin Pan Alley" days entitled "Themes Like Old Times." The program will conclude on a patriotic note with the band performing "Amazing Grace" and "God Bless America," both arranged for the band by director martin Becker. the program concludes with John Phillips SOusa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."

The concert will be at the new Family Life Center at the Warsaw First Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Market and High Street.
