Community Quiz Bowl Returns March 14Erin Serafino, Warsaw Education Foundation executive director, hopes to up the amount of teams participating in 2023’s Community Quiz Bowl from last year.
The Community Quiz Bowl, hosted by the WEF, will be 7 p.m. March 14 at the Warsaw Community High School Tiger Recreation and Activity Center.
Serafino said last year the Quiz Bowl had about 53 teams. This year, she would like to have 75 teams.
The Quiz Bowl is the biggest fundraiser WEF does. Last year was the first Quiz Bowl in-person after going online and being cancelled the two previous years because of the Covid pandemic.
“So this year, we’d like to take it up a notch,” Serafino said.
She said all the money raised through the Community Quiz Bowl goes back to funding grants for classrooms or supporting the chess tournament in March.
“The more money we can raise, the more grants that we can give and the more things we can support in the schools, in Warsaw schools,” Serafino said.
Teachers can apply for Red Apple Grants twice a year. They can go for anything, from purchasing books for English as a second language learners to games or books.
During the Quiz Bowl, there are four categories, “which we haven’t released yet.” Serafino said the four categories will be released via social media so people can study ahead of time. In each category there are 15 questions for a total of 60 questions.
The teams will answer from one person’s Smartphone or iPad through an app for the Quiz Bowl. The teams will see the right answer after answers are submitted.
Points will be kept track of along the way.
Serafino said the team that wins first place will win a traveling trophy, which is currently in production, along with bragging rights.
“The Quiz Bowl is just fun. It’s a fun time. With the last couple of years of everybody having to isolate, it’s nice that in 2023, people are coming really back together and getting out in the community and doing more things. And we’re seeing more events available. And this is just a fun way to get together with your friends or coworkers or whomever, family, and turn around and see another table of people you might know and just feel those connections and know you’re supporting a great cause with our kids and teachers,” she said.
Teams have to register by Feb. 28. Serafino said teams do not have to be completely set up at that time. Team members can be added later, she said. But it’s nice to have at least four members on the team by the time the team registers.
There are four levels of entries: team sponsor for $300; team entry, $300; honor roll, $1,000; and valedictorian, $2,500.
If a company doesn’t have a team that wants to play, but wants to sponsor a team, they can do so through the team sponsor option, she said. There are a lot of school teams that want to play.
There are no team requirements. Serafino said last year, she had a family that brought their kids as a team because they loved trivia as a family. She said a team outside Warsaw Community Schools or outside Kosciusko County would be fine to register.
