"Plant the Seed - Read!" Kosciusko County's second annual community book read, was kicked off Thursday at the Education Summit.
Introduced by Brenda Rigdon, executive director of Kosciusko Literacy Services and a member of the Vision Team at the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, which sponsors the book read, this year's event will feature "To Kill A Mockingbird," by Harper Lee.
The book read, Rigdon said, is meant to promote reading for pleasure and to encourage discussion. "To Kill A Mockingbird" was chosen for several reasons, the main one being that it promotes the 40 Developmental Assets for children, including, she said, respect for cultural differences, family support and positive family communication, adult role models, caring neighborhood, integrity, honesty and equality and social justice.
To enable anyone who wants a copy of the book to get one for free, the Vision Team again this year has set up bright yellow bins at 30 places around the county. Books are available in each bin, and residents are asked only to pass on the book after they've read it.
The books will be available until February.
