SYRACUSE - In an attempt to make the meetings run more efficient, the Syracuse Town Council is forming committees to review items before they are brought before the full board.
Tuesday, the council formed the ordinance, budget and the policy review committees and appointed chairs to each. Councilman Paul Stoelting will chair the ordinance review committee with Brian Woody chairing the budget review committee and council president Larry Siegel chairing the policy committee.
In other business, the council:
Approved a contract with the town of Millersburg to provide them with animal control service.
Heard from town marshal Tom Perzanowski that the Syracuse Police Department is participating in Project Child Safe, funded through the Department of Justice.
The project provides gun locks for free to any Syracuse resident who stops by the police department beginning today. Initially, they are only going to give one per person.
Met new paramedic/firefighter Chad Ford.
Approved for the fire department to purchase a new command vehicle on lease for $7,106.95 per year for five years from Burnworth-Zollars Chevrolet, Ligonier.
Heard from parks superintendent Michael Hixenbaugh that in its first full year, the community center had 39,531 visitors.
Approved the nomination and appointment of Carl Myrick, Jake Bitner, Clint Houseworth, Ron Sharp and Robert Houser to the well head protection board.
Approved the water department to purchase a small 2004 Ford Ranger from Burnworth Zollars Chevrolet, Ligonier, for $12,650.82.
Approved the street department to spend up to 70 percent of the total 2004 tree budget for the removal of 11 trees deemed hazardous.
Members of the Syracuse Town Council are Paul Stoelting, Larry Siegel, Cassie Cowan, Brian Woody and Brian Antondies. The council meets at 7 p.m. in the town hall, Syracuse, on the third Tuesday of every month.
