Commissioners Vote to Keep Old 30 Open for Roundabout Construction

A change order approved by the Kosciusko County Commissioners this morning will allow for Old 30 to remain open as another roundabout comes in.

The $64,000 change order was brought to the commissioners by County Administrator Ron Robinson.

“That change order is what it will cost to keep Old 30 open during our next roundabout,” said commissioner Ron Truex.

The next roundabout will go in at Zimmer Road and Old 30.

Robinson said the next roundabout project will go to bid April 11 and should begin as soon as weather cooperates.

“During our last project it was proved that Old 30 is a very busy route to bring traffic into the city,” said Truex.

Truex said businesses along that section of Old 30 were promised that they wouldn’t be put through a road shut down again.

The commissioners also approved several speed limit ordinances in the Claypool area.

It was approved that the following stretches of road have their speed limits changed to 45 miles per hour:

– Kinsey Road between CR 400S and CR 550S

– CR 800S between CR 200W and Ind. 15

– CR 600S between and Ind. 15 and CR 400W

– CR 400W between CR 600S and CR 625S

– CR 625S between CR 400W and CR 450W.

The commissioners signed an inter-local agreement with Nappanee and Elkhart County concerning 911 service.

The agreement won’t take effect until January 2013, but would drive all 911 calls inside the city of Nappanee into Elkhart County’s 911 system and those Nappanee homes outside city limits would have 911 calls go to Kosciusko County.

Robinson was given approval to move forward with purchasing a generator for the Kosciusko County Work Release building in Warsaw.

Robinson said the building had several problems with losing power last summer and that some of those situations neared critical status concerning refrigeration.

Robinson said the cost of such generator would be about $30,000.

The commissioners also approved two recommendations from the Area Plan Commission.

Milestone Real Estate received approval to have a tract of land near Wawasee Airport rezoned from public use to agricultural.

The purpose, according to attorney Steve Snyder, was to build storage warehouse buildings.

The other was to vacate two undeveloped alleys in the Barbee Chain of Lakes area. That was passed 2-0-1 with commissioner Brad Jackson abstaining.
