The County Commissioners, with just two members present, once again decided to table any decision on forwarding petitions for Chapman and Tippecanoe lakes to the Lakeland Regional Sewer District.
The commissioners heard from county attorney Mike Miner.
Miner said he had been in contact with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.Miner said one option the commissioners could look into was creating a countywide sewer district. He said his recommendation would be to table the decision until the commissioners' next meeting or later.
Miner also told the commissioners that the LRSD could be a hybrid of elected and appointed members.
Commissioner Ron Truex, who previously gave a presentation detailing the Tippecanoe and Chapman petitions, was out of town on business. Commissioners Brad Jackson and Bob Conley agreed to hold off on a decision until Truex returned.
Conley apologized to the dozens of residents from both Chapman and Tippecanoe lakes who showed up to see a potential vote. Conley said the issue would be reconsidered at the Aug. 18 meeting.
Though discussion of the matter was closed to public comment, Dave Tyler of Tippecanoe Lake, came forward during the part of the meeting where the commissioners allow any other business to come before them. Tyler took issue with Miner's presentation to the board.
Tyler asserted the makeup of the LRSD is "between them and IDEM." Tyler has asked Miner why he suggested the commissioners table the decision.
"The Lakeland Regional Sewer District has been in existence for several years," said Miner. "And no shovels have hit dirt yet."
Dennis Pletcher, from the county highway department, gave an update of some road work his department is doing.
He also notified the board that NIPSCO decided to close a section of CR 250E from U.S. 30 to Wooster Road for repair work all this week. That will lead right into work by Phend and Brown, who will repair the recently renovated section of CR 250E. That section of road is expected to be closed until the end of September.
The commissioners also heard from County Administrator Ron Robinson.
Robinson said work on the courthouse dome would begin in two weeks.
Robinson also asked and was approved by the commissioners to purchase a truck from Kerlin Motors for $24,700. Robinson noted that last winter, by using their own truck last winter to plow around the courthouse and county justice building, they saved around $30,000.
The board also approved a travel request for a representative from the county dispatch center to travel to Washington, D.C., Sept 19-22. The trip would certify the county's dispatch center through the center for Missing and Exploited Children.
County Auditor Marsha McSherry presented the 2010 holiday and meeting schedule.
