Kosciusko County commissioners Tuesday approved a highway department program to upgrade gravel roads in the county.
The program, once implemented, may cost property owners wishing to pave their gravel roads. The highway department will calculate five-year maintenance costs of the unimproved road after it is paved, and will contribute that amount. The property owners must contribute the remaining funds.
If the maintenance costs for the road exceed the cost of the upgrade, the highway department will cover the entire cost of the upgrade.
"We are looking for some type of mechanism that will be a fair way of upgrading gravel roads and saving the county money in the long term," said Rob Ladson, county highway superintendent.
The commissioners also:
Approved a drug screening, to be performed by MedStat, for highway truck drivers;
Approved an ordinance for a series of stop signs in Enchanted Hills subdivision.
