The county commissioners approved giving $5,471,000 in bonds from the federal government to Porter County this morning.
County administrator Ron Robinson said the bonds won't be able to be used by the county before the deadline of Dec. 31, and Porter County has been asking surrounding counties, with the permission of the state, for any unused funds.
The money was a part of a federal stimulus package.
"This is money that we had previously pledged to the city that fell through," said commissioner Ron Truex. "We no longer have time to put it into another project. It's a shame. We thought we had it used."
The money was earmarked to attract a Canadian business, Iotron, to locate in Warsaw. The business subsequently located in Whitley County.
Two agreements were signed to provide maintenance to an x-ray machine at the justice building and with the company that provides service to the old courthouse.
The total cost for both agreements was about $40,600.
The commissioners also allowed Matt Boren from Kosciusko Area Bus Service to make purchases for equipment using federal funds.
After a recess, the commissioners, with county attorney Mike Miner, opened bids for county supplies in 2011.
There were 31 bids opened and County Highway Superintendent Scott Tilden said he will take a couple of weeks to review the bids and bring his recommendations to the commissioners at their next meeting.
The next commissioners meeting is Nov. 23 at 9 a.m. in the old courtroom.
