NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊThe Manchester College football team won its first conference game of the season Saturday when the Spartans defeated Mount St. Joseph 36-14.
In its first win in 10 conference games, Manchester scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. That marks the first time the Spartans have scored in the first quarter so far this season.
Freshman running back Antonio Watkins led the Spartans with 169 yards on 39 carries, while freshman quarterback Seth Hoppe was 15-of-24 passing for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Darren Reed had nine receptions for 199 yards and a touchdown.
Amos Frye, a NorthWood High School graduate, led the Spartans with 13 tackles on the day.
Manchester improves to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Spartans travel to Hanover College for a game Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The Grace College volleyball team won one match and lost twice at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational this weekend. Grace defeated St. Francis 15-3, 15-2, 14-16, 16-14 before losing to NAIA No. 15 Missouri Baptist in five games 10-15, 15-6, 15-13, 15-17,15-8. Finally, NAIA No. 16 Indiana Wesleyan defeated Grace 15-5, 15-12, 15-9.
Agaist St. Francis, Kate Millen had 16 kills and six blocks, while Tricia Doyle added 11 kills.
In the loss to Missouri Baptist, Jessica Zaugg had 70 assists and two aces, while Millen had 22 kills and seeven blocks. Doyle added 16 kills and 24 digs and Jamie Gill had 19 kills.
Finally against Indiana Wesleyan, Millen had eight kills and Doyle had three aces.
Grace (21-15, 5-1 MCC) will play at Bethel with a chance to win the Mid-Central Conference Championship Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. If Grace wins and Indiana Wesleyan defeatd Taylor that night, the Lancers will win back-to-back regular season titles.

Grace Wins 3-2 in shootout

The Grace College women's soccer team avenged a 3-1 loss to Bethel in the regular season by defeating the Pilots 3-2 in a shootout after a scoreless 120 minutes of action Saturday in the first round of the Mid-Central Conference Tournament.
Bethel entered the game as the No. 4 seed, while Grace was the No. 5 seed. Both teams had opportunities as Bethel outshot Grace 27-26 in regulation and the two overtime sessions.
But Grace came up big, scoring three times on the penalty kicks, while Bethel scored just twice. Kristen Black scored on te fifith and final attempt for the Lancers clinching thhe win. The game was the first shoot-out in women's soccer history at Grace and officially goes in the record books as a tie.
Grace (8-9-2) will move on to the second round of action this week against No. 1 seed St. Francis. The Cougars defeated No. 8 seed Goshen 3-0 and will host the Lancers Wednesday at a time yet to be determined. St. Francis defeated Grace 2-0 earlier this year.

Playing their third game in four days, the Grace College men's soccer team came out flat and lost in the Mid-Central Conference Tournament first round to Indiana Wesleyan 3-0 Saturday. The Lancers had defeated the Wildcats 1-0 earlier in the season.
Indiana Wesleyan put the pressure on Grace early as Deno Merrick scored three minutes into the action. Mark Burton scored just five minutes later giving the Wildcats a 2-0 edge.
The score remained that way until the second half when Indiana Wesleyan added the final goal by Josh Halpern two minutes into the second half.
Grace (9-2-2) will compete in the NCCAA Regional Tournament beginning in a week.

The Manchester College men's soccer team traveled to Thomas More College in Kentucky Saturday and came home with a 2-0 win. The Spartans scored once at the 16:30 mark and again at the 85:00 mark. Manchester is 7-10-1.

Manchester hosts invite
Saturday in North Manchester
The Manchester men's and women's cross country teams hosted the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Saturday in North Manchester. Anderson captured the men's title, while Hanover won the women's competition.
Manchester placed third in the men's race and seventh in the women's competition. Josh Combs placed sixth overall, while Mike Derryberry was 10th. Libby Borror led the women's squad by placing eighth overall.
