HANOVER -ÊThe Manchester College softball team was a perfect 4-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference last weekend at Hanover College. Manchester defeated three higher seeded teams in the tournament.

In game one, fifth-seeded Manchester defeated fourth-seeded Bluffton College 1-0 as Nicolette Gasior picked up the win on the mound. Forest Lamborn was 2 for 4 for Manchester, while Gasior drove in Tiffany Ozbun for the winning run.

In game two, the Spartans defeated top-seeded Hanover College 3-2 as freshman Gusta Wayne was the winning pitcher. Manchester was down 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh but pulled out the victory. Katie Seward, Gasior and Kelly Phelps were 1 for 3, and Michele Atkins was 2 for 3 to pace Manchester.

In Saturday's Semifinal game, Manchester defeated third-seeded Mount St. Joseph 1-0 to advance to the finals of the double elimination tournament. Gasior picked up the win for the Spartans.

Game four found the Spartans in a rematch with Mount St. Joseph, and Manchester came out on top with a 4-0 win behind Gusta Wayne's pitching. Michelle Atkins was 2 for 3 to lead the Manchester squad.

Manchester advanced to the NCAA tournament with an automatic bid.

Gasior, Phelps and Becky Moening were named to the HCAC All-Conference team.

Saturday in Defiance, Ohio

The Manchester College baseball team moved into fourth place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with two wins over Defiance College Saturday. The win ties Manchester at 9-9 with Mount St. Joseph. However, the Spartans have the tie breaker because they defeated Mount St. Joseph twice in the best-of-three series.

In game one Saturday, Manchester won 3-2 as Joel Barrus relieved Ryan Tait to pick up the win. Thom Conover was 2 for 4 at the plate, and Craig Hersey was 2 for 2.

In game two, Manchester won 7-1 behind the arm of Tom Davison. Hersey went 2 for 2 again, and Darren Reed was 3 for 4. Nick Chaney was 2 for 4.

Manchester moves on to the HCAC tournament hosted by Hanover College May 11-12. Tournament times and pairings will be announced later.

Saturday in Winona Lake

The Grace College baseball team ended its season Saturday by defeating St. Francis (Ill.) in a doubleheader 10-9 and 7-1. The wins gave the Lancers a seven-game win streak to end the season and a final record of 17-23. Those 17 victories are the most by a Grace team since the 1973 team went 17-12.

In game one, Grace fell behind 9-2 in the fourth, but scored five times in the bottom of the fourth and added three more in the bottom of the seventh for the win. Nick Tribby pitched the final four innings for the victory and Greg Hannah, Steve Walta and Mike Cox each had two hits.

In the second game, Mike Presley pitched a five-hit complete game and did not allow an extra base hit. The Lancers got all the runs they would need with a four-run first inning. Walta went 3 for 3 with four RBIs in the win.

NCCAA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Saturday in Cedarville

The Grace College track and field teams traveled to Cedarville University for the National Christian College Athletic Association Championships and the men finished seventh overall, while the women ended tenth.

The men scored 50 points to edge Indiana Wesleyan for seventh and fell just three points short of sixth behind Geneva. Greenville College won the championship with 173 points.

The Grace College 3200 Relay team won the National Championship with a time of 7:47.61, which was just .15 seconds faster than Greenville's team. Daniel Njenga placed second overall in the 1500, running a 4:00.05.

The women scored 19 total points to finish 10th overall. Malone won the women's side with 188 points.

Andrea Hostetler broke the school record in the 400 hurdles, running a 1:04.14 to finish third in that event.
