VALPARAISO - The Grace College softball team shocked Division I Valparaiso Thursday, defeating the Crusaders at Valparaiso 5-3 and 4-1.

In game one, Valparaiso led 3-2 heading into the fourth inning when the Lancers manufatured a run on a walk to Rachel Liebsch, a sacrifice and an RBI single from Kelli Irish. Tied at 3-3, Grace scored twice in the fifth inning as Irish drove in two more runs with a single to give the Lancers the win.

Liebsch got the win, pitching seven innings and allowing earned run.

In game two, Grace trailed 1-0 heading into the top of the seventh but got four consecutive hits and scored four times in the inning. Nicole Chessum moved to 6-6 on the season, pitching seven innings and allowing one earned run. She also went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Grace (9-13) will play at NCAA Div. II IPFW today at 3 p.m. Valparaiso drops to 10-12 on the season.

Thursday in Anderson

The Manchester College softball team traveled Anderson for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon. The Spartans dropped both games to the Ravens, 3-2 and 8-5.

In game one, the Spartans tied the game at two in the sixth inning, but Anderson scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to get the win. Tiffany Ozbun led the Spartans with a hit, a run and an RBI. Nichi Zechar recorded the loss for the Spartans.

In the second game of the twinbill, Manchester held a 4-3 lead until the bottom of the sixth when Anderson exploded for five runs. Manchester managed to score on more run, but it was not enought to overcome the Ravens. Cathy Bounds was 2 for 3 with a doublel, a walk and an RBI for Manchester, while Crystal MacLaughlin was 2 for 3 with a run and a double. Nicholette Gasior picked up the loss for the Spartans.

Manchester is now 13-13 on the season and 3-3 in HCAC play. The Spartans will host Mt. St. Joseph at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Thursday in South Bend

The Grace college golf team traveled to South Bend for a golf tournament Thursday. The Grace squad finished sixth out of eight teams in the tournament.

Dan Harney led the Lancers with a 78, while Darren Parker shot and 80.

Grace is now 4-10 on the season.
