WINONA LAKE - For Ben Tonagel, Dan Scharlach and Jeremy Swanson, their final home game in a Grace men's basketball uniform didn't go as planned. The three seniors helped Grace to a 10-point halftime lead over Taylor, but Taylor sent the game into overtime and then won 88-86.
Grace never trailed in the first half and led 45-35 at the break. The Lancers shot 55 percent in the opening 20 minutes and held a 18-12 advantage on the boards.
In the second half Taylor turned things around and took its first lead with seven minutes to play. Grace fought back from a 68-65 deficit with six straight points, four from Brian O'Dell, to take a three-point lead before the Trojans sent the game into overtime.
Matt Moore hit a three-pointer to give Grace a 75-74 lead early in the extra session, but Taylor responded with a 9-2 run to take control. Matt Traylor then hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win for the Trojans.
Freshman Matt Abernethy led Grace with 28 and 10 rebounds, hitting 8 off 15 field goals and 12 of 13 free throws. Abernethy is now 10th on Grace's single season scoring chart with 710. O'Dell and Scharlach 17 points each, while Moore chipped in with 14.
Taylor is now 17-14 overall and 7-6 in the MCC, while Grace falls to 11-20 and 4-9. The Lancers end the regular season Saturday at Goshen in a 3 p.m. game.
