TRACK AND FIELD
DePauw Invitational
Saturday in Greencastle
Four school records, two fieldhouse records and an automatic qualifying berth to the NAIA National Championships were the highlights of the Lancers track competition this weekend.
The men's distance relay ran away from the competition, establishing a new school record of 10:23.66. Their time eclipses a record set in 1999 by Sy Belohlarek, Eric Frenchak, Brett Gerhart and James Kennedy by more than eight seconds. Their time was also a fieldhouse record and gives theman automatic invitation to the NAIA national championships. The team is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation. Freshman Jerid Stoffel, a Wawasee graduate, led off the relay with a time of 3:13.80 in the 1200. Junior Michael Schaadt followed with a 52.80 in the 400. He handed off to sophomore Paul Paschal, who toured the 800 in 1:57.5. Freshman Daniel Njenga anchored the 1600 with a time of 4:20.00.
Dennis SImmons also set a fieldhouse record in the men's 400. His time of 52.73 seconds earned him first place. Simmons also placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 23.91.
The Lancer women were busy setting school records of their own. Sophomore Chrissy Moyer broke two school records Saturday. In the women's 1500, she broke Debbie Downing's record set in 1999 by nearly nine seconds. The new mark is 5:15.73. Moyer also bettered her own mark in the 3000 with a time of 11:36.80.
Also setting a new school mark was Christy Groff in the 600. Her time of 1:57.33 breaks a mark set in 1999 by Melissa Martin.
The Lancers will be in action next at the National Christian College Athletic Association National Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday. The meet begins at 10 a.m. at Sienna Heights University in Adrian, Mich.
