NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊThe Manchester Spartans opened the baseball season by splitting a doubleheader with Grace College Saturday in North Manchester.
In the first game, the Spartans edged the Lancers 11-10. Manchester was up 3-0 in the second inning, but Grace exploded for seven runs in the top of the third to take a 7-3 lead.
However, Manchester made a comeback and scored eight runs, two in the bottom of the seventh to earn the 11-10 win. Darren Reed led the Spartans with two doubles, while Jeff Hartzell and Trevor Haley added one double each. Joel Barrus pitched the win.
Grace College's Ryan Sturm led the Lancers with a home run. Thomas Boyd hit a double for Grace.
In game two, the Lancers came back to defeat the Spartans 7-2. Grace jumped out to an early 3-2 lead in the third inning, and Manchester was not able to overcome the deficit. Sturm led the Lancers with his second home run of the day, while Steve Walta and Mike Cox added doubles for Grace. Mike Presley gets the win for the Lancers.
Scott Long led the Manchester squad with a homerun.
Grace College is now 1-3 on the season, while Manchester starts the year 1-1.

WRESTLING
Manchester College sent three wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Tournament at Ohio Northern Friday. Josh Hardman, Darrell Carr and Jason Carr competed in the Tournament for the Spartans.
Hardman defeated Ashley Grillo of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology before losing to Jimmy Wallace and Natahniel Cross of Augustana.
Darrell Carr, a Wawasee graduate, defeated Dustin Venedall of Wisconsin LaCrosse before falling to Dan Webber of Wheaton College and Pete Doucet of Roger Williams to finish the season.
Jason Carr, also a Wawasee graduate lost his first match to No. 1 seed Andy Krueger of Buena Vista, but made a comeback to defeat Jose Gonzales of John Hopkins and Thorvin Aplans of St. Olaf before losing to Mike Ferris of SUNY-Brockport.
All three wrestlers were eliminated from the tournament.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Two Grace College Athletes earned national championship titles at the 2000 National Christian College Athletic Association National Indoor Track and Field Invitational Championship.
Junior Brett Gerhart won the men's 400 meters championship with a school record time of 51.04. He also placed fourth in the men's 200 meters and anchored both relay teams.
Freshman Micael Kimami also set a school record en route to his national championship in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:54.74. He also placed second in the men's 3200 meter run and ran on the second-place 4X400 relay team.
On the women's side, sophomore Tonya Christl was a runner-up in the 400 meters with a school record time of 62.54. Senior Sarah Orem set a school record in the triple jump with a leap of 34-05 to place second.
Sophomore Andria Parker placed second in the shot put, while junior Patricia Wood placed third in the long jump.
Overall, both the men's and the women's teams placed fouth in the National Invitational Championship.
The Lancers broke records in 17 events during the 2000 indoor season and will begin the outdoor season March 10 at Centre College in Kentucky.
