CROSS COUNTRY
NAIA Championship Tourney
Grace places 14th
The Grace College men's cross country team competed in the national championships for the first time in school history.
Coming into the championships, the team was ranked 18th in the nation. At the championships the team placed 14th, knocking off four teams ranked ahead of them, including No. 8 California State San Marcos, No. 10 Sienna Heights of
Michigan, No. 11 Cumberland (Kentucky) and No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan. More than 231 teams competed in the NAIA cross country this season.
The NAIA Championships were held at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. On a day that saw temperatures at 27 degrees and 15-20 mph, the Lancers were led by freshman Daniel Njenga. Njenga finished in sixth place to earn All-American honrs. He finished 37 seconds behind the winner, Alexiz Sharangabo of Brevard College.
Njenga was followed by junior Tim Sprankle, who finished 63rd with a time of 26:39. Sprankle was named to the academic All-American team for the second year.
Rounding out the top five for the Lancers were freshman Jerid Stoffel (95th), sophomore Art Woodruff (140th) and sophomore Paul Paschal (174th).
"This team of young men continued to overachieve all season," said Grace coach Kirk Heng. "At the beginning of the season, they set what I believed to be some lofty goals; however, by season's end, they had achieved all these goals and more. These young men worked very hard all summer and continued that hard work into the fall. While training twice a day, these men continued to excel in the classroom and lead on our campus. It has been a true honor to be associated with the fine Christ-centered men of this team."
