Clearly On The Record; How Many Bills Are Too Many; 34 Years LaterON THE RECORD – This week we heard a rumor that remarks made recently in an interview with the Times-Union by Judge Joe Sutton announcing his candidacy for Superior Court II judge were “off the record.”
“I don’t know who is spreading rumors and gossip,” Sutton said when asked about it. “I’ve never told anyone our conversation was off the record. I wish I would have said less, but I owned up to my mistake and withdrew with a public apology as you know. You and I both know, as does my wife, that the 2/2/20 phone call was not off the record. If someone thinks they are helping me by suggesting otherwise, they are not. If someone is trying to stir up more controversy, they should stop.”
We hope that sets the record straight.
BILLS, BILLS, BILLS – Did you ever wonder how many bills the state legislature considers during one of its sessions?
At the Legislative Review Session Friday at the Shrine Building, hosted by the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club, State. Rep. Curt Nisly (District 22) said the legislature is in its sixth week of the current session, with four weeks to go.
According to statistics he presented, there were 901 bills filed (451 in the House, 450 in the Senate). By “half time last week, when the bills crossed over,” Nisly said, there were 114 bills that had passed through the House and 169 through the Senate. “So that’s how many more we are dealing with.”
Only one House bill and one Senate bill have made it through and been sent to Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb to be signed into law.
When it came to Indiana State Sen. Ryan Mishler’s (District 9) opportunity to speak, he took the words right out of our mouth when he said, “First of all, you mentioned the number of bills. I’m one that feels there’s too many bills.”
RALLY FOR EDUCATION – At 2 p.m. Monday at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis, North Atrium, is a rally in support of Indiana’s public schools and public school students.
Scheduled speakers include Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana State Superintendent of Public Instruction; Dr. Phil Downs, Indiana Superintendent of the Year; GlenEva Dunham, AFT Indiana president; Cathy Fuentes-Rohwer, ICPE president, parent and school board president; Julie Klingenberger, president, Indiana PTA; Michelle Smith, teacher, Perry Meridian High School; Dr. Ramon Batts, concerned clergy; Dountonia Batts, Indiana Coalition for Public Education; and three student speakers.
The rally isn’t expected to be 15,000 strong, like the November event, but rally attendees are expected to come from all over the state and include parents, teachers, students and other public school advocates.
34 YEARS & COUNTING – Friday was a special day for Scott and Deb Wiley as it was the 34th anniversary of the day they got engaged at a Warsaw Community High School boys basketball game.
On Feb. 14, 1986, the Warsaw Tigers played East Chicago. By half time, the score was 31-24, Tigers. It also was at half time where a big sign was being carried around the gymnasium by three women. The first half of the sign read “Happy Valentines’ Day Deb Stroh.” The second half asked, “Will you Marry Me?” from Scott Wiley.
After the sign finally got to facing Deb, the crowd was cheering for her, and she gave Scott a big hug and put on the ring. Apparently though, Scott said she never gave him a verbal answer that night, so the next day in the Times-Union the newspaper asked Deb what her answer was. Of course, it all turned out happily ever after, and a video of the engagement can be seen on Scott’s YouTube video under 12Wiley12.
Congratulations on your anniversary!
ENDORSEMENT – On Tuesday, Governor Holcomb received the Indiana Builders Association’s first-ever gubernatorial endorsement.
“It is critical that the home building industry support candidates for public office that understand the important role housing plays in Indiana’s overall economy," said Brett Harter, president of the IBA. "Governor Holcomb’s success in bringing jobs to our state and making Indiana a desired place to work and live during his tenure has earned the support and respect of our leadership across the state. It is our honor to endorse his reelection as Indiana’s governor.”
“It’s an honor to accept the Indiana Builders Association’s first-ever gubernatorial endorsement," said Holcomb. "Together, we’re working to ensure every Hoosier has the opportunity to own a home, build a business or achieve their American Dream right here in Indiana. I look forward to our continued partnership as we work to continue Putting People First for another four years.”
Holcomb is scheduled to be the speaker at the Kosciusko County Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner April 16.
