Claypool Gets New Business

CLAYPOOL – The new Claypool Park Board set its first meeting and learned that it will benefit from a new business in town.

The new six-member board – with four voting members and two non-voting members – will first meet Thursday at 4 p.m. in the municipal building, they agreed during the regular town council meeting Monday. The responsibilities of each member will be determined at the first meeting.

Board member Dave Morgan announced that he plans to donate proceeds to the park board after he opens his sandwiches and sweets shop, Red’s Sweets. The shop, located in a former bank building at 111 S. Main St., will first open Saturday at 10 a.m.

Morgan told council members that he plans to give a portion of sales to the park board one day a week. He added he plans to offer breakfast in the future, available to local kids before school.

Also during the meeting, Water Utility Superintendent Gene Warner said he was able to have the mosquito sprayer repaired for about $600, much lower than the $8,000 he said last month it would cost to replace it.

The council approved $450 for 10 gallons of chemicals for the sprayer, which will cover the town about three times this summer.

And the council signed a contract extension with Veolia Environmental Services, at a cost of $8.75 per resident per month. That rate will increase to $9.10 at the end of 2014.
