CLAYPOOL - Claypool Town Council members met Monday night to discuss a number of new and previously addressed issues.
The Kosciusko County Board of Health has responded to a safety concern; a request of changing the current representation was discussed; the cost of monthly trash pick-up has been raised; the new clerk-treasurer has been appointed; a public meeting has been called for Dec. 31; and Bruce Sweetheimer spoke with the council about the Sweetheimer Trash Removal spring cleanup. The Board of Health confirmed that a letter was sent to an attorney on Nov. 20 regarding the burned-out house on Calhoun Street. The owner of the house has been notified, and there will be more information in the near future.
The concern of representation on Claypool council was again brought before the council. The issue was whether to keep three districts or have one at-large position and two districts. A motion was made to retain the three districts as is, and it was passed with two votes and one abstention.
Starting in January, the monthly cost of trash removal services will increase to $9 per household. The previous proposal of $8.50 per household was considered too low. In the past, the town has covered any increase in cost, which occurred during the year. This new fee will hopefully avoid any loss of funds for the town.
Representing Sweetheimer Trash Removal, Bruce Sweetheimer appeared before the council to resolve any unanswered questions. A spring cleanup was discussed for April or May, where ongoing customers can get rid of their bulk items, excluding paint and tires. These items will be charged according to size and weight.
The town council appointed Arlene J. Leiter as the new clerk-treasurer by a two to one vote. She will train for three days, and begin her term Jan. 1. Leaving the position is Tricia Marino.
"We've appreciated all her sacrifice and hard work," said town council member Don Miller.
The council scheduled a public meeting for 2:30 p.m. Dec. 31 to approve the transfer of end-of-year funds.
