A caption appearing under a photograph of a car-train accident in Tuesday’s edition requires clarification.
The caption stated that a car was struck by a train after attempting to beat the train through a crossing at CR 600N near Baseline Road.
That information came from initial reports from an officer at the scene and the engineer of the train.
The police report regarding the incident states the following:
“The engineer and conductor of the train said that a vehicle crossed the tracks in front of them without stopping at the stop sign, that vehicle barely made it across the track in front of the train. ... The driver saw the train in time to try to stop, but did not get stopped until it was in the path of the train.”
Also, a witness reported, “the train was blowing its horn steadily as it approached the intersection, and that it appeared that the driver of (the vehicle) did not try to stop until it was too close to the tracks.”
