City Sewer Plant Moves Outflow Per IDEM

Warsaw's original sewage plant soon will have a new outfall location following an Indiana Department of Environmental Management request to move the original placement because of an endangered species living in nearby waters.

The new disbursement area is estimated to be completed in the next two weeks, according to a report given by wastewater treatment utility department head Dave Henderson during Friday's Board of Works meeting.

"All but a few sticks of pipe are in the ground," Henderson said.

Earlier this year, IDEM officials reported finding club shell mussels in the Tippecanoe River near the old outfall location. Because the mussels are listed as an endangered species, Warsaw officials were told to construct a new site for the outfall, which would help to protect the environment of the mussels.

The $56,500 project began in May and should be complete by the end of this month.

In other matters, an auction is to take place July 15 to sell assorted unclaimed properties recovered by the police department over the last year.

Warsaw police department captain Perry Hunter informed BOW members of the department's desire to conduct the auction, which will consist of bidding for miscellaneous out-dated police equipment and various properties which remain unclaimed by county residents.

Diving equipment, bicycles and a 1997 Ford-Crown Victoria will be placed on the auction block on the day of the event.

"We've got a lot of bicycles out there that can be put to good use," Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins said. "Hopefully we can get some of these off (the department's) hands."

"It's interesting that we have all these bikes reported stolen and never found, yet all these bicycles that are found but never claimed,". Hunter said. "It's like the Bermuda Triangle of bicycles."

Also passed Friday were two contracts dealing with firefighter training inside Warsaw's fire department.

New physical abilities tests and public safety exams will be given to all firefighters and departmental officials to make sure all meet state requirements.

The board also passed new job descriptions for two positions inside the fire department, which blends assistant fire chiefs with additional responsibilities. Of the two chiefs, one also will assume the role of fire marshal, while the other will become a training officer.

BOW members are Ernie Wiggins, Jerry Patterson and Charlie Smith.
