City Salt Supply Down

Posted
Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer said the city’s salt supply is down and the city has salt on order.
Thallemer said the city has had 600 tons of salt on order since Jan. 8, but has only received 125 tons.
“We are waiting on the supplier for the salt to come in because there has been a demand with the snow events and a shortage of salt,” Thallemer said.
Thallemer said the city usually uses 3,000 tons of salt and has only received 1,000 tons of salt so far this  year. The city has 500 tons of salt on order it has not yet received.
Thallemer said the city has been mixing sand in with the salt to help with the salt shortage.
“It’s a big problem, a lot of municipalities are running out of salt and things with the weather in January have changed so fast and furious,” Thallemer said. “The reserves are down and we are doing everything we can to expedite the problem.”
Thallemer said he talked with the salt supplier officials yesterday and is awaiting an answer to when the city will receive more salt.
“We are in line with everyone else,” Thallemer said.
Thallemer advised drivers to use caution when approaching intersections as the city is short on its salt supply.
He said the street, wastewater and parks departments have been working together to clear roads and lay the salt.
“We are trying to use salt more sparingly to create safety at intersections,” Thallemer said.
