City Replacing Park Trees

Posted

Four large trees along North Detroit Street and Central Park in Warsaw were removed but will be replaced with new trees, Mayor Ernie Wiggins said Friday.

The trees were removed because they represented a hazard to the new, expansive Maish Flower Garden nearby. Limbs from the trees had broken loose and caused minor damage to the garden. Removal of the trees had been recommended by a committee that oversees the garden, and the city agreed with the request, Wiggins said.

The city paid for removal of the trees, but a maintenance fund established by the garden will cover the cost of new trees, he said.

The garden was funded by a private gift to the city and is valued at nearly $1 million.

Wiggins said he expects to hear some complaints about the decision. He heard complaints a year ago when a handful of trees were from the Center Street business district.
