City Offers Spring Cleanup Programs

Posted

Spring cleanup, both indoors and out, will get a boost this season from several programs offered by Warsaw's street department.

• On April 19 and 26, from 8 a.m. to noon, free mulch will be available to area homeowners and gardeners at the city's mulch collection site on West Center Street, west of the sewage disposal plant. Kim Leake, Warsaw's public works superintendent, said city workers will help the public collect the mulch. "You bring the vehicle, we'll load it," he said.

• City residents who want to get rid of old appliances may put those items out with their regular trash, Leake said. However, any appliances that use freon must have the gas extracted by a licensed technician, and must have a certificate or other form of verification to prove that it has been taken out.

• Warsaw's Dial-A-Truck program will begin May 3, Leake said, and will be available on weekends only. Anyone interested in the program should contact Leake's office at 372-9561.

• Leake also reminded Warsaw residents that any grass or leaves put out with trash must be bagged or boxed before city street crews will pick it up. No container may weigh more than 50 pounds, and limbs, branches and brush should be stacked neatly at the trash site.

The yard waste will be taken to the mulch site, where crews will empty the bags and boxes and grind up the grass, brush and leaves together for next year's mulch, Leake said. The leaves and grass must be bagged because the leaf vacuums have been put away until next fall, and materials that are dumped in the street simply clog up the storm sewers, he said.

Anyone with questions about any of the city's policies on trash removal should call Leake's office.
