Warsaw City Council held a special meeting Wednesday night regarding the Department of Local Government Finance 1782 notice for reductions to the 2012 budget.
The council approved a resolution to reduce the fire territory budget by $700,000 for 2012.
Councilman Charlie Smith made the motion for the reduction, seconded by councilwoman Diane Quance.
Council members Elaine Call, Cindy Dobbins, Jeff Grose and Jerry Frush also voted in favor of the reduction.
Councilman Mike Klondaris was absent during Wednesday’s meeting.
The reductions include $365,100 for salaries and wages, $15,000 for clerk-human resources support, $80,000 for pension, $8,000 for clothing allowance, $8,800 for new hire testing and $16,700 for attorney fees.
There also is a $206,400 reduction for insurance as part of the $700,000 that was approved in December.
Grose thanked the city for its efforts in reducing the budget in difficult economic times.
“I read things about big spenders but it’s really encouraging the city has risen above that,” Grose said.
“This is a good example that the city does the best it can with spending dollars and making sure to do that not knowing what the state is doing out of respect for the people we represent,” Grose said.
Mayor Joe Thallemer reminded the council that the city council will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. at city hall for its meeting Monday, and then have a strategic planning meeting from 5 to 9 p.m.
