City, County Set Long-Term Planning Session

Posted

City and county plan commissioners will take a look at current and anticipated land use at a "charette" set for Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The public's input is most welcome, according to Warsaw City Planner Jeff Noffsinger and Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission Director Dan Richard.

Elected officials, appointed plan commission members and people representing business and industrial concerns have been asked to participate.

"We have determined the first appropriate action would be to have a charette to preliminarily discuss growth and development issues," Noffsinger said, "especially on the northern border of Wayne Township and southern part of Plain Township."

Noffsinger and Richard will facilitate the meeting, to be held in the basement meeting room of the Kosciusko County Community Foundation Office, 102 E. Market St., Warsaw.

"We're trying to get ahead of the game," Richard said. "We want to put our heads together, get ahead of the game and formulate some long-range planning."

The idea is to be proactive instead of reactive when citizens come in with development plans. The charette will allow the city and county to coordinate land use issues so industrial areas aren't to close to residential subdivisions.

Maps will indicate current zoning, city limits and where and what kind of growth has occurred as well as available and planned water and sewer lines.

Noffsinger said the day will begin with an overview things he and Richard hope to accomplish, and then participants will move into small groups.

People can drop in at any time to participate, and getting into a group should be fairly easy.

"Citizens can talk about whatever they have in mind," Richard said. "I expect they'll bring in some really good ideas. That's part of the whole planning process - to see what people want."

This meeting is expected to lead to others over the next few months and culminate in a comprehensive plan.
