City Council To Hold Public Hearing On New Sewer Rates

Posted

Warsaw City Council will hold a public hearing to establish new rates and charges for sewer service at tonight's meeting.

Residential rates are expected to reach $24.50, up from $14.50, within the next two years. Rates have not been increased since 1989.

The increase is designed to boost revenues to cover bond issues of at least $12.5 million for a new treatment plant and $3.5 million for a collection system, for an estimated total project cost of $16 million.

Bids for the second treatment plant are expected to be let in December or January.

Current sewage revenues are meeting the costs and debit payments of the Boggs Industrial Park facility "and that's about it," CPA Todd Samuelson said at the August council meeting.

The new plant can be expanded to process 12 million gallons of waste a day and is anticipated to continue serving Winona Lake and perhaps Leesburg.

The council will also discuss plans to install ornamental lights along Lake Street and discuss vacation and personal day policy for the city's central dispatch employees.

The 2002 salary ordinance for elected officials will be read for the second time this evening.

A public alley vacation as requested by God's Highway to Heaven Church also will be heard.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.

City council members are Jerry Patterson, Bill Rhoades, Charlie Smith, Joe Thallemer, Trish Brown, Jeff Grose and George Clemens.
