City BOW Opens Public Works Bids

Numerous bids were opened by Warsaw Board of Works Friday for street department supplies (limestone, asphalt and concrete), for solid waste disposal and for recycling services. Awards will be announced at the Dec. 3 meeting.

Two contractors, the Packerton Landfill and Waste Management, submitted bids for solid waste disposal with quotes for four-year contracts. Waste Management also bid on the recycling contract along with Ameri-Waste.

Requests by Paul I. Cripe Inc. for a change order and extension of services for the Lake City Greenway project were approved. Additional bridge work costing $9,559 also increased the costs of supervision by $9,000.

Mayor Ernie Wiggins said approximately 80 percent of the $18,559 will come from the state and the remainder from the greenway donations fund.

The state will be requesting bids for the asphalt paths soon.

Jeremy Skinner, the assistant Huntington and Huntington County planner, has been named as the next Warsaw city planner. Human resources director Jennifer Whitaker said there were 15 applicants for the position. Skinner should start working in Warsaw sometime in December.

An agreement to support the Warsaw Community Development Corp. for an annual sum of $12,000 through Dec. 31, 2005, was approved.

The street department and the wastewater treatment plants both chose Aramark to provide uniform cleaning services. A few weeks ago the board of works opened bids from three uniform service competitors then declined to make an award. They advised each department to choose their own uniform contractor.

The board also:

• Approved fire department administrative assistant Shirley Fetrow to sign claims in amounts exceeding $2,000 in the absence of fire chief Matt Warren.

Fetrow said she anticipates few "large" bills this close to the end of the year. Warren is on medical leave following surgery.

• Approved Penguin Point as caterers for the Warsaw employee Christmas party Dec. 13 for $2,569. The contract will be paid with donations.

• Heard Boyd Brubaker, probationary firefighter, passed a six-month employment review.

Board of works members are Ernie Wiggins, Jerry Patterson and Charlie Smith.
