The people of the Silver Creek Church of God gathered outdoors Sunday morning for worship.
Saturday night, a motor in an air conditioning unit overheated and burst into flames, causing immense smoke damage throughout the church and making the building unsuitable for gathering indoors.
Firefighters from Silver Lake and Akron responded to the call from Debbie Craig, who first spotted the flames from her home across the road. Her husband, the pastor, was able to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher prior to the arrival of the firefighters.
