Editor, Times-Union: As the election draws near, there is much written and spoke of regarding our freedom and the principles on which our country was founded. John Adams stated that “The government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.” That’s a shame because if we were things would be dramatically different. For example, the Native American would have never been considered to be savage. There would have been no need for slavery and immigrants would never have been exploited. If our country was truly founded on the teaching of Christ, there would be no poverty or no wealth. Money would have little or no value and what few leaders we would have would be merely trusted servants that would descend into greatness with humble acts of service. We would awake each morning not thinking of financial success or how we are going to get by but of how we can be of service for those around us. We would care for the widows and orphans and honor our elderly. We would love those that oppose us and our way of life would not have to be defended. We would live simply and put the needs of others first. There would be true equality because we would be living out God’s kingdom here on earth. In his final days Jesus warned his followers that is they were to live out the kingdom of God on this earth would hate them for it. The powers would drag them before governors and courts and they would be persecuted. To live as Jesus taught is peculiar, upside down and challenging yet I believe God’s Kingdom is being lived out here on earth, on the margins and unnoticed by many. I also believe this will continue regardless of the election results. May we be a blessing to God. Nick Yoder Leesburg
