Choose Life

Editor, Times-Union:

I am writing in response to a letter published on Thursday titled "Abortion." The Bible clearly states that murder is sin. (Exodus 20:13) In Jeremiah, chapter one, verse five, it also says, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you."

I do not agree that "Obama is always being blamed for abortion." I do, however, believe that the issue of ending lives must be extremely important to Mr. Obama. One of his first acts as our new president was to remove a ban on federal aid programs that promote and perform abortions overseas. For a candidate whose platform contained a promise to fight for human dignity, this proves quite contradictory, or could even be deemed "a laughable, irritating political ploy."

Abortion clinics might not "invite women in on a red carpet and offer champagne," but by not disclosing the risks associated with the procedure, they are certainly not giving women all the facts. Mr. Burchette, your letter says that a fetus is not viable around the midpoint of abortion, which seems to be your way of justifying a partial birth abortion.

Have you ever seen an ultrasound? At 20 weeks, an unborn baby weighs around 10-1/2 ounces and is about 6-1/2 inches long when measured from head to bottom. The baby, which by 18 weeks is fully developed as either a boy or girl, is able to swallow, move his or her arms and legs and even has working kidneys. That sounds "viable" to me. Neonatal Intensive Care Unites have the staff and technology to nurture the growth and development of even God's smallest masterpieces.

I plead with all of you, from Kosciusko County and beyond, to take this matter seriously. These blessed babies cannot yet speak for themselves, so we must use our voices to speak for them. Choose life.
