As is tradition, the first weekend in May will not only bring a new superhero movie, but also Free Comic Book Day. Free Comic Book Day promotes reading and comic books. Chimp’s Comix & Video Games, 919 E. Winona Ave., Suite 4-6, Warsaw, is taking part from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. For just walking into the store, a person can get two free comics. To get additional comics, a person just has to donate one non-perishable food item for each comic they want. Donations go to the Salvation Army. In 2014, Chimp’s collected 841 items for the Salvation Army, and store owner Nick Kelley estimated they collected about 1,020 in 2015. As a “crazy” goal this year, he said he’d like to bring in 1,500 items. Kelley said there will be 80 comics to choose from this year. Fifty are brand new this year, while 30 return from previous years or are other comics Kelley added to the offering. The new superhero movie out this weekend at theaters is “Captain America: Civil War,” so a couple of the free comic books Kelley highlighted were “Civil War II” and “Captain America.” Others he noted were “DC Superhero Girls,” “Suicide Squad,” “Pokemon,” “Spongebob,” “Sonic,’ “Strawberry Shortcake,” “Assassin’s Creed,” “Attack on Titan” and “One-Punch Man.” Of the 80 comics this weekend, Kelley said 22 are all ages, nine are for readers at least 10 years old, 33 are for teens, 10 are for teens and older and six are mature comics. Chimp’s also will have a variety of specials in the store all day Saturday. Back issues will be 35 percent off, graphic novels 25 percent off, most statues will be 10 percent off and board games also will be 10 percent off. “We’ll have other specials such as spend $100 and get a Chimp’s T-shirt while supplies last. Buy a Sideshow or Hot Toys product in stock and receive a free Sideshow photo book with a $50 retail value for the first eight people,” Kelley stated. Patrons are welcomed to dress up as their favorite comic book hero, too, but there will be no contest this year.
