Child's Death Under Investigation

Posted
Warsaw police and the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the death of a child at his babysitter’s home on the city’s south side.

At 1:39 p.m. Monday, medics and police were dispatched to the 900 block of South Union Street after receiving a 911 call of an unresponsive toddler.

Payton Brettell, the 18-month-old son of David and Nova Brettell, Warsaw, was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital and later pronounced dead at 2:13 p.m. by Dr. Dennis D. Mansfield.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday at the Northeast Regional Forensic Center, Fort Wayne.

The preliminary results found accidental death due to positional asphyxia. The final autopsy and lab results are pending.

Warsaw Police Department Public Information Officer Kip Shuter said the toddler choked on the straps of a car seat.

“The toddler had been put down for a nap and when the babysitter came back he found that the todder was unresponsive,” Shuter said.

At this time, police believe the incident to be accidental and do not believe any foul play is involved, however, the case remains under investigation by the Warsaw Police Department, the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office and Child Protective Services.

The full obituary for Payton Brettell appears in today's paper.
