Child Support & You

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

Right now, the only people who are supporting my petition are those who have child support and visitation cases. I would like to tell everyone how our child support problems affect you.

We have non-custodial parents who do not want to pay support. They will either not pay anything at all, or they will pay only a little here and there and when they have to go to court every month. That is what I call playing the system.

So what does this do to you? Our government assistance programs that you help pay for are now picking up the slack for these deadbeats. The Medicaid program you pay for is taking care of all the child's medical expenses. The Welfare, HUD and food stamp programs are housing and feeding these children. Why? Because these children only have one parent supporting them. If the deadbeats were forced to keep jobs, pay support, and help with medical expenses, the number of children on these government programs would drop which means your taxes would drop.

Here's another thing. Some non-custodial parents are ordered to pay outrageous amounts in support each week. If a custodial parent receives $300 per week for one child, he/she can live off of that untaxable income with the help of government assistance programs. So again, your taxes pay for this child support problem.

What about the parents who have always paid support but can't now because they have lost their jobs or their hours were cut due to the poor economy? Some counties are taking a zero tolerance approach to child support. This means innocent people will be treated as deadbeats and prosecuted. So with your tax money, you are helping to pay for those innocent people to go to court, go to jail, etc. For anyone who says, "All they have to do is get a reduction," I can assure you it is not that simple for everyone. I can tell you many stories about how the good non-custodial parents are now being treated unfairly and cannot get reductions.

Another thing my petition addresses is unwanted teen pregnancies. These pregnancies add to the child support and visitation problems. They add to the number of families and children on government assistance programs, which leads to your high taxes.

Our child support and visitation problems are not just affecting us. They are affecting every taxpayer in our state. More people need to stand up against these child support and visitation problems because whether you have a case or not, this petition will help you in the long run.
