Child Support

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

My name is Michael Reiff. I'm currently in Kosciusko County Jail again, serving a portion of my 2005 conviction for non-support. I've been convicted of D felony and C felony cases in this county ongoing since 2001.

I have involuntarily lost three jobs since 2005 to serve jail time. My most recent employment lasted 14 months (July 2007 - September 2008) in which I just finished five months at work release on a violation charge. I petitioned to modify the remaining five years from DOC to county sentence so I could continue at work release and make regular payments to support with arrears: remind you the judge, as I believe, supported alternative decisions not to send me to prison.

After my time was granted, work release has since denied my return due to amount of time to serve: so here I am loss of job, paying no support in jail with five years local time to serve. I feel I am a perfect example that criminalizing child support cases is not effective and if the state suspends driver's license due to arrears, it will only worsen the child support debts.

Please help.

Michael R. Reiff
