Child Support

Editor, Times-Union:

Is anyone else out there tired of the lack of enforcement in our child support division? Unfortunately, our prosecutors have the burden of proof working against them.

I think the prosecutor in my case is doing an excellent job, but he is only allowed to do so much. Not paying support or playing the system is child neglect and should be considered that by law. I would never let my children go hungry, but if I did I would be put in jail and my children would go into foster care. So how is it OK for a non-custodial parent to do this very thing by not paying support for weeks, months or even years without any type of enforcement?

It seems to me that our courts are quicker to punish someone who does not pay a speeding ticket than they are to punish someone who doesn't pay support as ordered. Are the courts trying to tell us that a speeding ticket is more important than feeding our children? Isn't out state motto Kids First? What right does any parent have to say "I'm not supporting my kids this week or this month"? Why isn't child support a bigger issue in our state?

If a parent does not want to pay support as ordered, then he/she should get out of the picture. If a parent does not want to take care of his/her responsibilities, he/she does not deserve the privilege of being a parent. I thought if you are ordered by the courts to do something you either do it or suffer consequences. Not true if what you are ordered to do is pay child support. And then, when the custodial parent tries to fight back, she/he is labeled as "money hungry." Anyone who knows me can honestly say I am far from money hungry. But yes, I am fighting back because I am so tired of dealing with my situation and not seeing any results.

I have a petition going to fight this. So if you are as sick to death of all of this as I am, send me an e-mail at 79trm@comcast.net I'll give you the details about what I am asking for in the petition and what you can do to help.

Our child support system will never change if we do not do something about it. Each one of you has a voice that deserves to be heard and I will make sure that it is.
