NAPPANEE — A young child drowned Tuesday at the Nappanee Public Pool at Stauffer Park.
The pool will be temporarily closed following the drowning of the 10-year-old boy, according to a news release from the city of Nappanee.
The boy went under the water at around 4:45 p.m. at the pool when lifeguards retrieved him and performed CPR, according to WNDU Channel 16.
Further information on the child was not released in the news release.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the child’s family during this difficult time,” the release states.
Per standard operating procedures for the death of a minor, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.
“The safety and well-being of our community members and guests are of utmost importance. We are and have been fully cooperating with authorities during their investigation. Additionally, we have launched our own internal review of the situation,” the release says.
Mayor Phil Jenkins’ stated, "Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by this incident. We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate event and are fully committed to working with everyone affected by this tragedy."
The entire Nappanee community is united in grief during this profoundly challenging time, the release concludes.
