DENVER, Ind. - Charles W. Balsbaugh, 92, of Denver, Ind., died at 5 a.m. Nov. 27, 2009, in Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester.

He was born Oct. 17, 1917, in Miami County, to Charles and Emma E. Doud Balsbaugh. On Dec. 28, 1941, in Huntington County, he married Virginia M. Gilbert, who survives.

He graduated from Jefferson Township High School, Mexico. He was a lifetime member of First Brethren Church, Mexico, where he served as a deacon for many years. He served in the Pacific Theater in the U.S. Army-Air Corps in World War II. He was a farmer, growing grain and raising livestock in Miami County after studying agriculture at Purdue University. He was also a tomato and apple inspector for the Federal and State Fruit and Vegetable Inspection Service. He held a small aircraft pilot's license.

Also surviving are three daughters, Jean A. (and spouse Donald) Musselman, Linda M. (and spouse Jack C.) Koenig and Peggy J. (and spouse William D.) Wellsand, all of Denver; a sister, Marguerite A. Buckingham, Warsaw; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were Sunday at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Bill Cook officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Mexico, with military graveside rites.
