SYRACUSE – Charles E. “Chuck” Vanderveer, 82, of Syracuse, passed away at 6:55 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, at his home.
He was born on July 3, 1936, in Grand Valley, Colo., to Charles and Ester Hendricks Vanderveer.
He was a lifetime New Paris/Syracuse area resident, graduated in 1954 from New Paris High School and served in the United States Army.
He was married on Aug. 17, 1956, in Syracuse, to Shirley A. Bell who survives.
He worked on a farm as a young adult, Burger Dairy in New Paris for two years, rural post carrier in Syracuse for 37 years and Monsanto in Ligonier for eight years.
He was a member of the Maple Grove Church of the Brethren in New Paris and formerly attended the Syracuse Church of the Brethren. He was a volunteer at Camp Mack and an avid genealogist.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Vanderveer of Syracuse; daughter, Chris (Tony) Keck of Goshen; son, Michael (Patricia) Vanderveer of Goshen; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Georgia Hammel of Goshen.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home with Pastor Dwayne Runkle officiating.
Private family burial will take place in the Syracuse Cemetery.
