Chapman To Be Treated May 24

Posted

Aquatic Control, of Seymour, is expected to treat with 2,4-D about 30 acres of invasive Eurasian water milfoil (EWM) in both Chapman Lakes May 24.

The spraying is being conducted under a contract with Chapman Lakes Foundation Inc., sponsors of the aquatic plant control treatment project this year.

Treatment this year is being limited to afford state biologists the opportunity to carefully study results and the impact the treatment could have on lake environment and fisheries, according to Jed Pearson, district biologist. Information gained this year is expected to lead to treatments throughout both lakes next year, provided studies show minimal impact.

Residents along the shoreline where treatments are undertaken are cautioned to avoid swimming for one day and not irrigate broadleaf plants (bushes, flowers and small trees) for 21 days. There is no restriction on lawn watering, provided broadleaf plants are avoided. Shorelines adjacent to treatment areas will be marked clearly with yellow signs.

The project is funded in part by a grant from the Indiana Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) program and a local match from CLF. LARE funds are derived from a fee on Indiana boat license registrations.
