Chamberlain Named To Library Board Seat

Posted

Warsaw Community Schools Board appointed Larry Chamberlain Monday to the board of the Warsaw Community Public Library.

Chamberlain, whom the board interviewed Jan. 6, will complete the unexpired term of Ron Raber, who resigned because of health reasons.

Three of the seven library board members are appointed by the school board.

School board members Craig Allebach, Dan Robinson and Charles Sauder were sworn in Monday after being re-elected to their positions last fall.

Gordon Vanator was re-elected as school board president, with Dan Robinson as vice president and George Klinger as secretary.

Lincoln Elementary principal Laura Sparzo and several staff members reported to the board on their "team teaching" concept for fifth-grade math. They said the practice, instituted this year, provides individualized instruction to students who need extra help, while allowing more advanced students to move on after they master the math concepts.

The board also:

4 Heard a report from assistant superintendent Dr. Tony Etienne on developing a local assessment study that would allow the school corporation to follow each student's progress more clearly and to focus tests on Warsaw Community Schools' curriculum.

4 Agreed, in its ongoing school policy review, to consider policies that include student due process, locker searches, corporal punishment, drug and alcohol use, and attendance.

4 Heard a report from school superintendent Dr. Lee Harman on a recent Gallup Poll on education. The national poll showed that school-to-work issues, student behavior and discipline are major public concerns; that the majority of people polled favor a voucher system that would let them choose private or public schools; and that most people would rather their children get average grades and be active in extracurricular activities than get all As and take part in no activities.

4 Scheduled all school board meetings for the second Monday of each month, and approved board members' salary at $2,000 per year, the maximum amount allowed by state statute.

The school board will meet in a special session at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 in the lecture room at Warsaw Community High School to discuss block scheduling and school size.

The next regular school board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 in the administration building.
